About the Department
|
|
It is one of the pioneer institution in the
field of Social Work education. The Department started in 1989 offers
the 2 year MSW programmes, M.Phil, and Ph.D. programmes
with excellent field work components and professional exposures,
enriched by the Department active research, project activities and
extension and outreach programmes. The Department also
offers the 1 year PG Diploma Programmes in
Woman & Child Development, NGO Management, Guidance and Counselling. The students of MSW are given the
maximum exposure by way of organizing seminars, symposiums and guest
lectures which ultimately improve their public relation skills,
decision making skills, networking skills etc. The department also
has got one UGC funded Women Studies Centre since July 2009. This is the only co-education
college in Coimbatore city which
has been sanctioned with the Women Studies Centre. This centre is
right now doing sensitization programmes on
women’s issues, organizing seminars, capacity building programmes, skill development programmes
for the women to get empowered. We have one student dialogue centre
which works on every Wednesday and Thursday between 3.00 and 5.00
p.m. Our social work faculties will give counseling service to the
needy and
deserving
students required of
various departments of the college.

The Department has a full team of competent and accomplished faculty
members. The College principal Dr.A.Ponnusamy
formerly headed the department and guiding the department now. At
present Dr.Geetharamani Shanmugam
is the Director of the department. The members of faculty are
committed to upgradation, quality
improvement and student guidance, and are actively engaged in
research and extension activities and action-oriented projects.

The MSW Programme
|
|
The 4 semester MSW programme has subjects
of study and other curricular components framed by the College under
autonomous status to offer the students a professional practice
oriented perspective of the subject area built upon the foundation of
understanding of the underlying philosophical, legal, sociological
and psychological concepts. It comprises 15 theory subjects, 4
fieldwork practicals and a project of
investigation and action plan formulation in the final semester.

Value Addition
|
|
The students can earn additional credit by taking extra subjects if they
so desire. The Post Graduate Diplomas at the School are open to MSW students on
part-time basis.
|
|
Students have access to the well equipped Computer lab and the
Internet and the Multimedia facilities of the College. Training in
the basics of computer applications is arranged as necessary.
|
|
The students are encouraged and provided opportunities to become
computer and internet conversant, and to appreciate the potentials of
the informatics revolution for social emancipation, awareness generation
and development.

Student Achievement and Progression
|
|
Right from its inception the School
of Social Work (Social Work
Department) has been maintaining the unique distinction of bagging
the first rank in the Bharathiar University year after year.
|
|
Around 90 percent of the Alumni, many of whom are from other states
have settled down overseas especially in USA,
UK, Canada
and the Gulf countries. Many of them are also working in India
holding good positions.

Placement Cell

GRD SSW has a very active placement cell. A placement brochure giving
the highlights, unique strengths and achievements of the School and
the students is brought out by the School every year and distributed
widely to enhance the placement opportunities.

Extension / Outreach
|
|
Apart from the village adoption and other field work which form part
of the course work for students, the Department engages in considerable
amount of extension/outreach activities by way of participation of
faculty (and students in some cases) in the projects and campaigns,
transfer of technology, skill development and training,
entrepreneurship development, awareness generation and other health
care and education related activities of the GRD Trust’s Centre
